I... I had to try out this new journal skin.

I mean look at it.

I'm sorry I haven't been very active here lately I've been very preo-
ccupied with life and school (FINALS WEEK NEXT WEEK OH GOG)
and work and life and Tumblr

I promise I will try to contribute more
of actual value this summer.

P.S. I will be at O-Conn on May 14th in the
Artist Alley.  It is located at Sandra Day O'Connor
High School in Helotes, TX (right outside of San Antonio)
so if you are in the area and want to have some happy
fun con times please stop by!  I always have fun and
the folks that run it are a blast.

  • Reading: Art History textbooks
  • Drinking: coffee, always coffee.
So today I went to Mizuumi-Con in San Antonio, TX.  It was nice to see old friends, and make new ones.  I didn't make much money, barely enough to cover my table but not enough for transportation.  Whether that is my own fault for looking so sour and sleepy (I didn't get my coffee this morning) or because the location of my table was kind of bad (little back corner facing the opposite wall of the cramped room we were packed into), I don't know.

Also, I am now into Homestuck like 99.99999999% of the internet.  If you haven't read Homestuck yet go do that or we can't be friends anymore :I
  • Listening to: All Homestuck soundtracks that exist ever
  • Reading: Homestuck
  • Eating: kawaiimoedesu melon bread-chan
  • Drinking: Strawberry ramune (lol weaboo time)
I know I've been lax on posting stuff here, but trust me, if you knew how crazy my life is right now, you'd understand.

However!  I have started the Drawing-a-Day challenge on my Tumblr and I will try to post at least one drawing/doodle every day this month.  So, if you have a Tumblr and want to follow me, go forth/

I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND the SPC Anime Club And BubbleHead Anime Event Episode 03 due to inclement weather and a sore throat.  But it looks like a neat event, and Bubblehead looks like a cool place for all of you hookah/bubble tea aficionados.  More info can be found HERE.

Take care everyone!!!
  • Watching: PSG
  • Drinking: peach tea with honey
Went to Mezasu Mini-Con in San Antonio last weekend and had a fantastic time!  I met a lot of great people, including old friends from First Storm Manga who I rarely get to see (like my old con pal :iconchrisholm: ) and met some other very talented artists, such as :iconcinnamoron: and :iconradiuszero: .  I've always loved their art from afar but never gotten the chance to meet them, and they were very friendly.  We all went out to dinner at my favorite restaurant afterward to celebrate a successful convention!  We may do another mini-con in the near future, so I will keep you posted.

The comics panel with Austin "Redbeard" Rogers (which was called "HOW TO KILL UNICORNS...oh, and How to Create & Self-Publish Your Own Comic") went awesome. I hope we were helpful to everyone who watched us.

And now that I've finished one con, another con is hot in its heels!  I confirmed my table for Mizuumi-Con (info can be found HERE ) on MARCH 26.  It's an awesome con run by some awesome people who are awesome, so come check it out if you are awesome!

So I've been thinking about my major of choice, and my future, and how it all relates to my being able to support myself.

Now I'm an Art major (well technically Communications Design which is like Graphic Design but that's another discussion for another day).  Originally, my dream job was freelance artist who worked by commission, so I could travel while I did my art.  But lately, especially since some stuff happened this summer that has severely cut my finances, I have been worrying about the financial reality of working freelance, let alone working freelance while traveling.

Now I know all about the typical, generally-expected "starving artist" lifestyle, and I know I shouldn't have any aspirations of grandeur or I will just be severely let down when I don't become a millionaire who can charge thousands for a single sketch.  Even without traveling, the reality is that art is generally a very subjective career field that could potentially have me constantly in the poor house, and I do not want that, nor do I want to work multiple jobs to make ends meet for the rest of my life (much as I love Starbucks).  I just want to be... comfortable.  I don't want to worry about when my next meal will come.  And eventually, if/when I get married and if/when I have a kid/kids, will I be able to support them and send them to college?

So I guess if I'm going to panic, the best time to panic is early in my college career.  Fortunately, I've taken all core curriculum so far, so this isn't changing headings in the middle of the voyage.  I guess my question is, do you know of any art-based career fields that I could maybe look into that are a little more financially stable than freelancing, that would perhaps even incorporate my love of travel?  Other than teaching, none immediately come to mind, and even teaching is a dangerous path these days (with numerous layoffs in schools across the nation, and the complete removal or art programs from many schools).

Lately I've been thinking that it might help me to get some kind of business certification, perhaps in International Business, but I can't think of how this would connect to my art.  If you guys have any other suggestions or resources, please let me know.  My future depends on it.
EDIT: Updated information on the comics panel, and a better link to Mezasu's information.

So I dunno if you guys noticed, but I added a new con to my list of cons I will be attending in the near future.

It's called Mezasu Mini-Con, and it's a small one-day con run by First Storm Manga, a San Antonio art and writing group which I am proud to be a member of.  It will be on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the C4 Workplace in San Antonio (more information can be found HERE.)

Admission is FREE so you really have no reason to not come!  Kidding.

At the convention, Austin "Redbeard" Rogers (COME CHECK OUT HIS WORK HERE) will be hosting a How To panel on web comics, which I will be assisting with.  Please come out and support the original artists!

Thanks, and I hope to see you there!

So I bought a table for San Japan.
The tables didn't go on sale until 9 tonight.
I was waiting at my computer for 15 minutes.
My internet crashed in the middle or registering so I had to call my best friend Tori to register over the phone with me.
The tables sold out in 30 minutes.
Holy crap, what a ride.

Also, today was an awful day.
One of my dogs died today.  My dog, Pete, the first puppy I ever picked out and my dear best friend of almost 15 years.  He had been falling apart for some time now, and today while I was at work my mom made the decision to put him to sleep.  He was in so much pain and so out of the game mentally that it was the best thing to do.

Even now as I write this, I'm crying just thinking about losing him.  I have so many wonderful memories with him, from the day my mom surprised me with him by bringing him into my kindergarten class, to the way he loved hugs and actually leaned in when you bent down to hug him, to all of the fun my friends and I had imagining him saying silly old man things in his later years.  His temper as a puppy may be the reason why I have trouble looking people in the eyes as an adult, and his breath stank to high heaven, but he was the best dog i could have ever asked for.

RIP Pete, 1996-2010.
  • Watching: Christmas movies
  • Drinking: Passion tea
So I'm on tha Tumblr now too:

I don't know why but the name Tumblr reminds me of Boggle.  Like, some game where you would have to roll dice, or shake something in a cup.

I don't know, maybe I'm crazy.

Also at some point I should get a subscription... or maybe some kind soul will give me one for Christmas.  Oh well.

Ok I know it's not a new year (well it may be a new school year for those of you in school this semester), but it's a new account, which to me feels like the beginning of a shiny new era.

Welcome to the new digs, pull up a chair, help yourself to the drink in the fridge.  But use a coaster - God help you if you leave water rings on my oak coffee table.
